Calling all Mamas (and Papas!)

So, I am in need of some "been there, done that" advice. Several of you have, in your own tenures as "mama" or "papa" (or any other name you'll answer to when called out by a wee one), provided a great deal of wonderful advice on the best of the best products, services, brands, etc. you've found. Unfortunately, most of that advice came prior to being an expectant lady. SO... in building our "baby wants and needs" lists, I'd love your assistance in identifying your favorites in the following categories:
  • Stroller (Best brand? Four wheels or three? Do you need all the storage capacity? Which style is the easiest to handle with one hand?)

  • Bouncy Chair (Best brand? When do babies start using it?)

  • Swing (Best brand? What else do I need to know here?)

  • Vibrating Chair (Best brand? Is it necessary to have more than a couple speed settings?)

  • Bottles (Best brand? Glass or plastic? Disposable inserts?)

  • Diapers (Best brand? Does the brand differ by age of child? Disposable or cloth?)

  • What else?

As well - tell me if I'm crazy to be thinking of some of these.... perhaps it's not necessary to have some of these things at all...and maybe I need three swings. Again, this is a first time gig, so I need some slack for asking less-than-intelligent questions.

  1. Roxi I had portible swing I used all the time for John when he was a baby. Sakura hated it so i never use a swing with her. They both liked the vibrating bounce seat as well. I used plasic botals I was always afraid that they would break around the baby. But then some people call me paranoid too so. What ever you chose will work its all by trail and error every child is differnt. Sakura hated the walker john loved it sakura hated the exersacer (where it stays on one place and they can spin around to use differnt toys.) but john loved it. Just take your time also I found all dipers had the same effect, till they start crawling and walking then the crusers by pampers work wounders.

  2. Hey Roxi!
I recommend taking a 'mother' with you when you register for the first time...or at scope out the store with one. You can always make adjustments to your registry later. That way they can give you their advice on what works and what doesn't. Granted, every baby is different but it is nice to get opinions from those that have already have the experiences. I had Jessie come with me and I went with Katie. Let me know if I can help in any way!!

  4. When Becky was working at the hospital the portable swing was a lifesaver, sleep came quickly to both Chris and Sami but at times there were problems getting them out without waking them.

As an environmnetalist cloth Diapers, at home and disposable when away from home.

Regarding in ones, where it is a car seat, carrier and stroller.

Is the Vibrating Chair for you or Chris??

  5. Do what ever you feel is best! I loved the portable swing and vibrator in one. It was easy to take to the grandfolks. I use plastic bottles. The ony problem with that is after a couple of weeks no matter how many times you cleaned them they always seem to go bad, and you have to buy new ones. Dippers what ever brand you want. I liked walmart the yellow ones. They seem to hold more. :) Stroller I suggest that you get one that you can run with, because you like to run. I would get an umbrella one for mall and trips though. Easier to handdle. You will pick what is right and get rid of what is not:) Love Sami

  6. Every baby is different. My little guy liked his swing for sleeping, but didn't like it if he was awake. He did like his bouncer at daycare though because he could watch everything going on around him.

Our little guy is breastfed, but takes bottles of breastmilk at daycare. We had to try a number of different bottles for Alexander until we found the one he liked (Avent plastic bottles), but again, every baby is different.

Diaper-wise, I would have loved to do cloth, but it was too big of an expense for us up front. Instead, we use Huggies or Kirkland signature diapers (which are made by the same people who make Huggies) from Costco, whichever is cheaper at the time. Diapers are also baby dependent. Pampers and Luvs always leaked for us.

Stroller/car seat-wise, we got a Graco Snugride travel system. The stroller is kind of heavy, but the diaper bag fits in the compartment underneath really well. We'll probably get an umbrella stroller in the next few months.

A life saver for us has been the Kiddopotomus SwaddleMe blanket. Our little guy sleeps much better at night when he's swaddled tightly with his arms in (STILL at 10 months old). He can even roll over both directions while swaddled with his arms in. We had to get a bigger size after Alexander outgrew the small. Once again, this is baby-dependent. Some babies hate being swaddled.

Sorry I'm not much help, but all babies have their own preferences.

  8. OH Roxi Lynn...there IS so much to learn! It's so overwhelming when you step into a "Babies 'r Us" & are surrounded by numerous baby products!
I'd recommend getting a swing AND a bouncy chair...you just never know what baby will prefer! I'd LOVE to go with you sometime to show you what i like/didn't like & what worked for us! I agree with Kelli above with the swaddle blanket. We used that a LOT! You don't need the fleece one (i dont' think) because baby could get too warm in it. Jacob still likes to tuck his arms under him for comfort, because he was in a "straightjacket" (as my mom had called it)---i don't care, he loved that thing!
I breastfed jacob for a year & if you can do it, DO IT!!! Its the absolute best thing for baby! And you will save so much $$. You'll need to purchase a breast pump if you are going to breastfeed (wait to buy this until after you know breastfeeding is actually going to work--this is expensive). When i was away from jake & he had to take a bottle, i really liked the Playtex bottles (the curved vented ones)--i don't like the liners personally, but never tried them. The plastic ones were great! The Avent bottles had to be twisted JUST right otherwise they would leak & that drove me nuts because some breastmilk would get wasted that way!
Diapers...Pampers all the way!! We've used those since Jacob has been born & haven't had any troubles at all. They probably are a bit more spendy, but its worth it! And wipes, I prefer the Huggies over the Pampers brand because they are thicker.
As far as carseats, we had Graco for our first one & got the whole travel system which is more for your money...the carseat, stroller together!
Anyways, this is getting to be pretty dang long...let me know what other big questions you have about baby things....i LOVE to help! :)
    Take care momma!
